Delving into the complexities of a region profoundly impacted by conflict, Wayamo’s Communications and Logistics Officer, Ahmed Gouja, published a personal account of the situation in his home town in Darfur titled “War Has Destroyed My Darfur Town: I Will Keep Fighting for Justice” in The New Humanitarian.
This article offers a personal perspective on the challenges faced by civilians in Darfur, as well as the urgent need for humanitarian assistance, justice and accountability: “I personally will never give up the fight for justice in Darfur. I will not stop documenting crimes and calling for an end to impunity. I will always seek to bring attention to what is happening in my region. The next generation deserves nothing less.”
On 19 May 2023, Gouja Ahmed spoke at the international justice symposium “Transition from where? Transition to what? Exploring transitional justice efforts in an ever-changing world” hosted by the Wayamo Foundation, the Africa Group for Justice and Accountability (AGJA) and the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communication in Nairobi, Kenya. In his video message, Ahmed Gouja stressed the continuing importance of accountability in Sudan:
Ahmed Gouja was born and raised in Nyala in South Darfur. Gouja has been monitoring and documenting human rights violations in IDP camps in Darfur since 2011 and has been contracted to do field work for the UN, HRW, Redress and the New Humanitarian.
