Within the framework of its “Capacity building for civil society and the justice sector in Sudan” project, on 2 July 2024 the Wayamo Foundation held the second in an ongoing series of online workshops bringing together Sudanese journalists and Human Rights Monitors for an in-depth training session on the best use of open-source investigative techniques in reporting the conflict and documenting human rights violations.
Robin Taylor, Research Assistant, Crisis, Conflict and Arms Division, Human Rights Watch provided in-depth training on open source investigations, focusing on the investigation destruction of homes, towns, and neighborhoods in Sudan using fire detecting satellite imagery. Taylor also presented the latest research from Human Rights Watch: “Sudan: Unlawful Attacks on Civilians, Infrastructure”, highlighting the role of open source research in the report.
Wayamo Digital Programmes Manager Kris Kotarski and Wayamo’s Africa Director Joseph Roberts-Mensah led a discussion on open-source methods in journalism, and storyboarding using the latest NGO research.
The Wayamo Foundation has organised media workshops for Sudanese journalists (including those documenting the conflict) with the objective of strengthening reporting skills and building their knowledge about critical justice-related issues within the framework of its “Capacity building for civil society and the justice sector in Sudan” project. Well-trained journalists and informed citizens are able to take a fuller participatory role in their countries’ democratic processes are key to enhancing local ownership of justice and accountability.
