Symposium report: The symposium, entitled “Beyond Narrow Interests –Justice and Accountability in East Africa”, was held on 27 November 2018 at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel. Guest speakers sought to identify ways to shift accountability efforts away from narrow political interests and approaches to accountability.
Isaac Lenaola Justice of the Supreme Court of Kenya, and Principal Judge of the East African Court of Justice, discusses domestic challenges to the judiciary in the East African region, citing attacks on judicial independence and corruption as key factors and stressing the need for; integrity, adherence to codes of conduct, and for governing institutions to take their responsibility seriously.
On 7 August, Arusha played host to an international symposium at the Mount Meru Hotel, aimed at exploring: judicial independence, integrity and ethics in the fight against international and transnational crime; case studies on the role of the judiciary in addressing human trafficking and corruption; and the relationship between domestic, regional, and international courts in combatting serious crimes.
As part of the International Symposium organised on 6 June in Arusha, the Wayamo Foundation organised a two-day training for investigators and prosecutors from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
